How Do You Change Your GE® Refrigerator Water Filter?

Changing a refrigerator water filter involves two significant steps. The first step is removing the old filter, and the second is installing the new one. Follow the steps below to remove and replace your RPWFE water filter cartridge:
  • Check the top left-hand corner of your refrigerator compartment. This is where the water filter cartridge is usually located.
  • Once you find it, turn the cartridge counterclockwise. This will detach it from the filter head.
  • Pull the detached cartridge directly out of the filter head. Discard it appropriately.
  • Remove the protective cap of the new cartridge.
  • Position the new cartridge at the entrance of the filter and insert it. Once inserted, turn it clockwise and listen for a snap sound indicating it is in place.
  • Clear the system and purge out impurities (if any) from the new filter by running about two gallons of water through the dispenser.
  • If your refrigerator has a “replace filter” indicator, reset it by pressing and holding the “water filter” button for about three seconds.
  • The first three ice sets from the ice maker are unsuitable for consumption. Discard it instead.
  • Note the installation date of the cartridge, preferably by writing it on the label. This will help you track when it is due for a replacement.
NB: Removing the cartridge in the case of a gray filter holder does not follow the same process. Here, you are not twisting the cartridge. Instead, you open the filter door and pull on the base of the cartridge. The cartridge then swings outward. Once there is no more swing, you can unseat the cartridge from the cartridge holder by pulling it gently. It is usual for some water to drip out when removing the cartridge.

How Do You Remove and Replace The MWF Or XWF Filter Cartridge?

  • Once you hold the old filter, turn it to the left until it can no longer turn. Pull downward gently from the filter head while turning. Ensure the filter stays level so spillage is minimized.
  • If you find it challenging to loosen the filter, it may be due to some air being trapped inside. You can release this pressure by pushing in on the water dispenser. This will ensure the filter drops right out.
  • Remove the new filter’s plastic cap.
  • Add some water from the tap to the top of the replacement filter until it is full.
  • Next is to insert the new filter into the cartridge holder. Doing this requires the arrow on the filter aligning with the cartridge holder. In cases where the arrow is absent, ensure the filter faces forward before insertion.
  • Once aligned, push the filter gently upward. This will engage the top of the cartridge in the filter head.
  • Turn the filter to the right gently until the filter cartridge can no longer turn. Turning the cartridge raises its position automatically.
  • Once you have replaced the filter, the next step is to release the trapped air. To do this, choose “water” on the dispenser selector and press the pad until you notice the water flow.
The first few ounces of water from the dispenser will most likely sputter. This is normal and often due to air in the replacement filter. Keep dispensing about 1-2 gallons of water until all the air is completely removed from the system.
