Your fridge can only provide clean, fresh, filtered water when the water filter is effective. That is why we recommend that users replace their refrigerator water filters after six months of use. Watch out for the water filter indicator to know when your water filter is due for replacement. Once the indicator is on, you should change the old filter to a new one and reset the system.
Read on to learn how to replace water filter on Samsung® refrigerator.
How to change your Samsung® refrigerator water filter?
Like most refrigerators with water filtration capability, the Samsung® fridge relies on a fully-functional, effective, and efficient water filter unit to remove impurities in tap water and provide you with cold and premium filtered water. However, this capability can be threatened if your fridge’s water filter becomes old and worn out.
So, how do you change the expired water filter in your fridge?
Step One: Determine which water filter you need.
You can identify your refrigerator type by checking the refrigerator’s serial number or model number. The model number is always on the body of the appliance, usually inscribed on a metal tag or a sticker affixed to the body frame. If you are unsure where your fridge’s model number is located, you can check the user manual or the manufacturer’s website.
If you are checking the serial number, you should watch out for the bottom left side of the outside of the fridge for side-by-side fridge models. However, if you use a top-mount freezer model, the model and serial numbers are often on the left-hand bottom side of the frame’s outside or the top compartment’s left-hand side. On the other hand, bottom-mount freezer models have theirs on the left-hand side of the bottom of the fridge or the upper right compartment.
Always use only original filters for your refrigerators, as third-party water filters may cause leaks and damage. There are three common filter types of Samsung® fridge filters, including the HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HACU1. Your choice between these will depend on the type of refrigerator you have.
Step Two: Find the Samsung® refrigerator water filter location.
The location of the water filter in a Samsung® refrigerator depends on the design, which varies across models. For example, the French Door models have theirs in the fresh food section. The side-by-side models have theirs on the fresh food side, just around the right of the bottom drawer. The Four Flex models have their water filters just between the produce drawers.
Finding the filter location and, by extension, the filter in your refrigerator means you know the exact filter type to get among the three options listed above.
Step Three: Replace the water filter.
Now that you have the replacement water filter unit for your Samsung® fridge ready, the next step is to replace the expired filter.
Follow the steps below if your Samsung® fridge is using the HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN filter types:
- - Ensure the water supply is off.
- - Find the water filter.
- - Open the filter cover and unlock the old filter by rotating it counterclockwise.
- - Once unlocked, pull the filter straight to detach it from the filter housing.
- - Unwrap/unbox the new filter and remove its protective cap.
- - Push the new filter directly into the filter housing.
- - Turn the new filter clockwise to lock it into place.
- - The filter is in place once the lock symbol is in line with the indicator line.
Follow the steps below if your Samsung® fridge is using the HAFCU1 filter types:
- - Ensure that the water supply is off.
- - Remove the old, worn-out filter by rotating or twisting it to the left.
- - You can check for the left arrow showing the unlock direction.
- - Pull the filter out to detach it from the housing.
- - Unwrap and push the new filter directly into the empty filter housing.
- - Lock it in place by turning it to the right. It is locked when you hear a click.
- - The top of the filter will correspond with the arrow on the filter housing to indicate it is locked.
Step Four: Reset the water filter indicator
After replacing your old filter with a new one, the final step is to reset the water filter indicator. This will restart the six-month operational timer and ensure the indicator only comes on after using the newly installed filter for six months or less, depending on the water quality and the amount of filtered water you dispense from your fridge.
Follow the steps below to reset the water filter indicator;
- - Locate the filter reset button. It is usually on the control panel.
- - If there is no filter reset button, check for another button that performs the function as a secondary function.
- - Once you find it, touch and hold the button for three seconds or until the indicator light resets.
- - If successful, the filter icon will turn off or revert to its original color.
Your fridge will now start the six-month timer afresh.
NB: If this does not work for your model, please consult your user manual to see how to reset the water filter indicator of your specific Samsung® fridge model.

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need to change the refrigerator water filters regularly?
Certainly, a filter is necessary if your refrigerator comes equipped with a water dispenser or an ice maker to minimize the presence of small particles of contaminants like chlorine or lead, as well as other impurities that generate unpleasant odors or flavors. You must adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines specified in your owner’s manual for replacing the filters at regular intervals.
Can refrigerator water filters be cleaned and reused?
We do not suggest to clean and reuse your refrigerator filters. Replacing the filter in your refrigerator is the best way to maintain fresh and clean ice and water. Although it may be tempting to try and clean and reuse your filters, it’s not recommended. Regular maintenance is necessary to keep your refrigerator’s filter free of algae, sediment, minerals, and other unwanted particles that can accumulate and promote bacterial growth. However, attempting to clean these substances out completely is not feasible. Therefore, the most convenient and efficient solution is to replace the filter with a new one.
Why are there black sooty particles in filtered water?
There may have loose carbon particles spill out from their blocks in the first time of use. So we suggest you give a thoroughly flush of the replacement refrigerator filter with flowing water before you install it.
How to stop water from freezing in the refrigerator?
It is recommended that you verify the temperature setting on your controls. If the temperature is colder than the recommended level in your Owner's Manual, adjust it to a warmer setting and wait for 24-48 hours to allow the ice to thaw (0°F Freezer, 37°F refrigerator). If the issue persists, you may want to consider replacing the refrigerator's water filter or water valve, as either one could hinder or halt the water flow from the dispenser.
